We had just returned from our “Pearls of the Western Mediterranean” cruise and invited friends over for dinner.
Naturally, they wanted to know everything about our trip. “Where exactly were you?”, “Which destinations did you visit?”, “What did you like best?”.
I pulled out my old Diercke Atlas and found the page starting with Genoa. Tracing the map with my finger, I showed our route and stops. Since the entire journey wasn’t on a single page, I had to keep flipping back and forth. Meanwhile, we showed photos on a smartphone.
Having taken over 450 pictures, we spent a lot of time swiping just to find one or two representative shots for each destination without overwhelming our friends.
After dinner, once everyone had left, I decided that at the next gathering, I would present our journey in a completely different, more compact, and emotional way.
I remembered a nautical chart showing one of James Cook’s routes. That was exactly how I wanted to showcase our beautiful voyage. The idea for CruiseMap was born.
